“One, two, three, smile,” says the voice behind the camera.

A soft grind. A gentle beep. Click. Shutter. Done.

If this were the worst part of taking a picture, the process wouldn’t be so bad, but emotions can become murky when we gather around the tiny screen at the back of the camera hoping what we see is accurate.

One of the greatest joys Alexis experiences through her line of work is showing women how beautiful they truly are. PlumbTalk Women is thrilled and deeply touched that Alexis drives her business based on this mission.

We desire for women to feel as beautiful on the outside as we know them to be on the inside. When we let our true beauty shine, there is no need to hide from the camera.

When you free yourself from the tasks of daily life and take time to feel beautiful, the phrase, “Let’s take one more shot,” won’t feel like you’re perpetuating torture. It will be a sign of how fit, fun and fabulous you are and truly feel.

I look so fat. My arm looks as big as my thigh. My smile is crooked. This hairdo makes me look twice my age. My eyes are half shut.

In moments like these, the most likely response seems to be, “Let’s take one more shot.” And so the cycle of torment begins again.

Will we ever be satisfied with the photographs we take? The answer may come as a shock. Many women actually experience a heightened sense of self-esteem when having their photographs taken.

Of all places, can you imagine feeling fit, fun and fabulous in front of a camera? It’s possible.

When Is The Last Time You Felt Beautiful?

Often times, we rank how beautiful we feel on our appearance. But we all know that beauty goes beyond skin deep.

“Knowing your worth, knowing what you can bring to the table,” says photographer Alexis Lawson, “Can increase a woman’s self-esteem and encourage her to truly understand the depths of her beauty.”~ Alexis Lawson

What do you bring to the table? Chances are that you offer a lot to the world. For instance, do you hold a job? Have children? Care for a spouse or partner? Keep up with your home? Attend to the needs of your parents and other family members? Participate in your community?

Fulfilling any one of these roles means you bring a lot to the table. Under some circumstances, you may feel like you are the table!

Take a moment to reflect on what you do for others. Recognizing all that you do for the world around you can increase your sense of self-worth. But beyond seeing your value in this way, it is also important to take an extra step and see yourself as beautiful, too. In order to achieve this, many women must step away from day to day routines.

Step away from life as you know it and do something for you. Do something that makes you feel beautiful.

Letting Your Beauty Shine

Letting your unique beauty shine can help you feel good about yourself. PlumbTalk Women’s fifth Lifestyle principle says, “A woman who feels beautiful radiates confidence and happiness.” But how do you uncover the beauty that you know lies within yourself so that you can bring it out for the world to see?

Alexis Lawson encourages women to let their beauty shine. But she doesn’t help women delve into their inner selves with talk therapy or motivational speeches. Alexis brings out the beauty of a woman with her camera.

A distinct form of photography, couture portraiture, is Alexis’s secret to helping women reach into themselves so they can bring out the beauty that they hold deep inside.

About Alexis Lawson

Alexis Lawson was not always a photographer. In fact, she once stood before a fork in the road, forced to choose one career path over another. Leaving education behind, Alexis went out on a limb and made a risky decision. She decided to give the path of professional photography a shot.

After spending some time capturing images of families and children, Alexis found herself drawn to a type of photography that allowed her to do something she felt passionate about; encourage women. She had a sense that putting a modern spin on the old style of glamour portraits was right up her alley. She loved the work of Sue Bryce, the portrait photographer behind the Olay Best Beautiful Stories. Through mentorships and workshops, she began shooting images as if she were a photographer for Vogue. Something about this type of photography hit home with Alexis.

Today, the couture portraitist is in business doing what she loves. However, the thrill she experiences from photography is only one of the many perks of her position. One of the best parts of her job, something she is very passionate about, is the transformations she gets to see in women each and every day. From the time that they enter her studio to the time when they leave, a true shift occurs. In this short time, they become powerfully aware of their beauty. And this beauty shines in the photographs Alexis takes.

Looking Fit, Fun, and Fabulous

Alexis believes that the more estimable things a woman does, the greater amount of self-esteem she has. In society today, women wear many hats and rarely have time to take them off, tease their hair and take glamorous photos. However, the foundation for mesmerizing portraits is always present; the good she does for others makes her feel good about herself. With some assistance from makeup artists and hair designers, and a few stylish posing tips from Alexis, a woman can let her true beauty shine for all to see.

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”

― Dorothea Lange

Many of our stomachs turn at the thought of someone photographing us alone, but Alexis knows how to make every woman look good. She believes connection with the photographer is important and posing is everything.

Here are some posing tips Alexis recommends so that you can look good and let your beauty shine in every picture you take:

  1. When facing a camera, hold your body at a 45 degree angle
  2. Place your hand on your hip and never let it rest against your body (this will make it look much larger than it is)
  3. Kick your hip out as far as you can
  4. To elongate your neck, constantly remind yourself to bring your chin forward and down
