At PlumbTalk Women, we’ve learned that all of us go on a different journey, but there are common steps along the way that lead to success.

Everyone has good days and bad days. One day you’re on top of the world, happily humming and floating across the floor because you just found out that your best friend is moving back to town; the next day you’re crushed because your boss tells you there is still no money to give you that long-awaited promotion, the one you were told you’d get last year.

When there’s a bad turn of events, it can be gut-wrenching. You may feel lost, discouraged, or depressed. You may think, “What next!? Why am I so unlucky?”

Equal and Opposite

But think about the reality of life. There is an equal and opposite reaction for everything.

A Grand Slam tennis final. The two best players of the tournament vie for the prize. The match is full of expectations. After the last ball is struck, only one person is given the champion’s trophy. One side is elated, the other is dejected.

Now think of something a little more relatable.

You finally make the decision to quit the rat race and start your own business. You’re tired of taking orders from others, going through the repetitive motions of a daily grind and being told there is no money to promote you. The reaction after resigning is excitement, but what else is there? Anxiety, uncertainty… second-guessing as the money barely trickles in. But then you land a big account and you have hope again! You’re so glad you walked away from a steady paycheck and took a chance on yourself.

Again, you have an equal and opposite reaction. One is positive; one is negative.

3 Steps to Success

The following three steps to success just happen to be equal and opposite.

  • The best defense is a good offense.

Ultimately, if your offense is strong, meaning you’re proactive and take life by the horns, you will not be passed up. Don’t get into defensive situations where you’re using words that you’ll regret. Treat others how you want to be treated. This is an offensive game plan that, when executed well, is unbeatable.

  • Live in the present moment, not the past.

Don’t be consumed with the past; be consumed with the NOW. That’s where opportunity lives. There’s a reason we don’t have eyes in the backs of our heads. We need to focus on what’s in front of us.

  • We all exist in a state of perfect imperfection.

Is this world perfect? Definitely not. Are we perfect? No, but we are who we are, and in a weird way, that does make us perfect. We’re the perfect concoction of bones, nerves, muscles, and cells, born to make mistakes. But if we learn from those mistakes, then are they really mistakes? No, they’re more like a valuable experience that won’t be repeated again.

The Journey

At PlumbTalk Women, we’ve learned that all of us go on a different journey, but there are common steps along the way that lead to success.

Winston Churchill may have said it best:

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Maybe our path is to build up our own business. Maybe our newly relocated best friend can help us walk down that path.

Knowing we are allowed to fail from time to time can boost us at the lowest moments. And the knowledge that we’ll eventually succeed if we stick to it is a powerful ally.

Let’s take the steps together.
